Event description

Please join us for AUSTRALIAS BIGGEST CARERS CHRISTMAS LUNCH to acknowledge and appreciate unpaid family Carers

Family Carers are often unable to celebrate Christmas, receive any gifts or have a beautiful lunch due to their caring responsibilities. Working 24/7 can be socially isolating, lonely and disengaging, ultimately affecting carers’ mental health and well-being.

This special lunch is to raise awareness and recognise our carers, our real UNSUNG HEROES, who give so much and ask for so little. Carers will be attending from all over Qld, and Australia, and need to be registered with The Carers Foundation Australia.                              You may REGISTER HERE

We will also be presenting the JOSH ARIENI UNSUNG HERO LEGACY to Carers from each area with a Dream Legacy Experience, sponsored by Mike Arieni from Solar Bollard Lighting.

If you know a carer who deserves recognition, or you are a carer please nominate here:

ABOUT THE CARERS FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA

Established in 2015, The Carers Foundation provides support to Australia’s true unsung heroes – unpaid family carers. These selfless people give up their own lives to care for their loved ones with a disability or illness, often with no choice.

Founding director Ronnie Benbow OAM had always had a burning passion to support Carers since she was a young nurse, when she identified that Carers had worse health conditions than the person they were caring for.

Ronnie saw firsthand the impact of caring when a 15-year-old boy who was caring for his mother (who had experienced a massive stroke), took his own life as he could no longer cope since he was alone and unsupported.

Since then Ronnie has been working tirelessly to support unpaid family carers by providing preventative wellbeing programs with the purpose to avert mental and health crisis breakdowns from compassion fatigue.

Any additional donations are fully tax deductible

I am so pleased to be formally a part of the Carer’s Foundation.

I was a carer for several years back in the 80’s. Back then there was no term ‘carer’ as such. You just ‘looked after’ someone who couldn’t. In my case it was my husband, who was less than impressed at being in a position of dependence and infirmity. I took it upon myself to downplay the true gravity of the situation to help him maintain his dignity.

Then, there was no such term or even concept of ‘self care’.  I can remember being very frustrated and I now know extremely resentful that during his incapacitated stage and then recuperation that no one thought to ask me how I was.  The toll that it takes on a carer on a 24/7 basis is extremely debilitating. At the beginning you have lots of people with offers of help but as time goes by there is no support as the situation ‘just is what it is’.

I felt isolated, abandoned and extremely lonely. There was no help except for my Mother who did her best.Taking any time out for myself was simply not an option due to time and money constraints. I found the concept of Self Care several years later and adopted it as a life-line. I now teach and speak on this topic which is so important for everyone, not just carers.

What Ronnie and the Carer’s Foundation offer is support, empathy and being part of a community. The Carer’s have group sessions where they get to be seen and heard and learn tools to be able to cope with their individual situations.

This education is priceless and life changing.  I am so proud to be a part of this selfless organisation.

Nat Nixon is an international best selling author and probably best known for her passion for colour, adventure and love of her family and friends. The love of her three adult children, Hannah, Oliver and Harriet knows no bounds!

Nat adores and loves travelling with her husband, Rob around the world incorporating their business with clients mainly in the United States.

Nat is a proud supporter of the Carers Foundation and last year was the Singing Champion in the Unsung Heroes 2023 Campaign raising $175,000.00

To quote Nat

“Singing makes me happy and gives me a voice, which I haven’t always had.”

“Part of my story is in my historical novel, Blue Almond Eyes. This is the story I had to write down, my family’s story of oppression, racism and injustice, it was very cathartic for me to write and I think my ancestors would be proud.”

I’m so proud to support this wonderful cause and give the Carers, the Unsung Heroes our support and a big loud voice that is heard’.

We are so excited to have Nat and her families support to help raise awareness for the unpaid family carers and the foundation.

As an ambassador, I stand with the Carers Foundation in their quest to not only support caregivers in their current roles but also to prevent potential burnout, hospital admissions, and foster a healthier, more resilient care-giving community.

The Foundation’s vision aligns with my passion for advocating for those who selflessly dedicate their lives to caring for others, and I’m committed to amplifying their impact, standing in solidarity with the unsung heroes of our society.

Huge thanks to Amanda Stoker and Sky News for helping us to raise awareness of the challenges family carers face every day. More than 30% of carers sadly pass away before the person they are caring for due to the immense stress on their physical and mental health. It is simply unacceptable.
